                   dSALVAGE PROFESSIONAL Version 4.0

dSALVAGE PROFESSIONAL from Comtech Publishing Ltd. is a menu-driven
mouse-compatible program for diagnosing, repairing and editing data-
files created by FoxPro, dBASE, Clipper, DBXL and related products.
    It contains the following features:

  USER INTERFACE:
Pull-down menus are available at every step of operation. Most file
recovery tasks are automatic although all writes to disk are under user
control. Program commands can be issued from the keyboard or with a mouse.
Many forms of file damage are repairable in-place without the need for a
separate output file although the user always has the option of specifying
  an output file if desired.

  HELP SYSTEM:
On-line help is available at every stage of operation.

  COMMAND-LINE DIAGNOSTICS:
Check the health of datafiles from the DOS prompt or from within a batch
file. Supports wild-cards and pathing. Produces a report for screen display
or redirection to a file. The report contains a one-line statement for each
file checked indicating whether or not the file is healthy.

  INTERNAL DIAGNOSTICS:
Checks the disk for the existence of cross-linking or lost cluster damage
in the File Allocation Table and provides an on-screen report of its
findings. Allows immediate repair if problems are discovered. Then goes on
to diagnose the user-specified datafile resulting in a detailed on-screen
diagnostic report of all errors found together with a recovery
recommendation. Recovery involves only a few keystrokes in most cases.
Proper diagnosis is a critical element in file recovery since symptoms
observed while in your application do not always reflect the true damage
situation. Improper recovery processes can compound damage and make
  recovery more difficult or impossible.

  MEMO REPAIR:
Enables automatic repair of all common forms of memo-related damage
including corrupt "next-free-block" pointers in memo files as well as memo
field pointer corruption in the DBF files. Complex damage forms can be
repaired using the specialized editors contained in the program.

REMOVAL OF NON-ASCII TRASH IN RECORDS:
File is positioned to first damaged record. Repair the record with a single
keystroke. Continue-from-here finds next bad record. Move to next or
previous record at any time. Perform instant diagnosis of any record. All
repairs done under full user control.

  UNWANTED END-OF-FILE MARKERS IN RECORDS:
Convert them to harmless spaces throughout the file with a single keystroke.

  DAMAGED OR MISSING FILE HEADER:
Transplant replacement header from a donor file or use the Header Builder
to construct a new header from the data in the damaged file.

  DATA OFFSET:
File is automatically positioned to the offset. Realign the file with a
single keystroke. Continue-from-here finds next offset (if any). Move to
next or previous record at any time. Performs instant diagnosis of any
  record.

  UN-ZAP:
Recovers data in ZAP'd files without re-writing the file.

    Automatic Un-ZAP:

Completely recover a ZAP'd file (that has not been overwritten) with a
      single keystroke.

    Manually-assisted Un-ZAP):

Recover the non-overwritten portion of a partially overwritten ZAP'd
file. Access and retrieve data from any free area of your disk. Data at
boundaries of deallocated clusters is displayed allowing you to accept
or reject it. Accepted clusters are added to the file's allocation
chain. The File Allocation Table and the disk directory are updated
      automatically.

  HEADER EDITOR:
Change information in a damaged header to make it compatible with the file's
  data:

Record size Field names Record count Field types
Field count Field widths Version number Field decimals

Change by selecting a parameter and entering a new value. Changes do not
require file rewrite. Optionally copy header to an external file. Change
field names without having to recopy the file (as does the MODIFY STRUCTURE
  command).

  RECORD EDITOR:
Displays data in typical xBASE edit format allowing user to access any
record and change data in any field, including memo field pointers. Search
for data. Continue data search from location of last find. Move to any
record by specifying absolute or relative record number offset. Counts
good records and optionally adds end-of-file marker after last record.
While in the Record Editor you have direct access to the contents of an
associated memo file enabling scanning of memo blocks, character string
search of memo blocks and automatic correction of memo field pointers in
  the DBF records.

  BYTE STREAM EDITOR:
Displays file data as an unformatted continuous character stream. Change
any data by overtyping. Search/find data even if it crosses field or
record boundaries. Continue data search from location of last find.
Position cursor to any desired byte by specifying absolute or relative
byte location. Useful for measuring record/field lengths. Force a write to
disk at any time. Full block operations: Mark a block. Copy or move a
block to another location. Write a block to an external file. Delete a
block (with undelete capability). Paste data from an external file. Can be
used with any type of file including COM and EXE files.

  HEX EDITOR:
Displays file data (including header) in hex and ASCII format. Change any
file byte by typing over current data in hex or ASCII. Search for any byte
(including nulls, control and extended ASCII characters) anywhere in the
file (including header). Continue search from location of last find. Can
be used with any type of file including COM and EXE files.

  EXTENDED ASCII CHARACTERS SWITCH:
Allows all extended ASCII characters (graphics) to be treated as acceptable
  characters.

  ALL-CHARACTERS SWITCH:
Allow all characters except nulls to be treated as acceptable characters.

  FOREIGN LANGUAGE SWITCHES:
Allows the high-bit characters in French, German and/or Spanish to be
  treated as acceptable characters.

  COMPATIBILITIES:
The program is fully compatible with the latest versions of FoxPro, dBASE
and all other xBASE products. No file size or disk size limit. Network
  compatible with minor limitations.
